2012 03 15 - Bruno Giacosa Dolcetto d'Alba Falletto di Serralunga 2010

2010 vintage
The 2010 vintage was characterised by a long and harsh winter, with some snow showers which lasted until March. Rain continued until May and germination and bloom were delayed. A dry spell followed until the third week of June which brought new rainfall and some hailstorms. Fortunately, these did not cause any damage. July was not particularly warm while August was characterised by storms accompanied by a fall in temperatures. In September the situation changed again with a rise in temperatures and a very good temperature range between night and day. This vintage which is unusual in climatic conditions benefi tted the great vineyards.
The white grapes such as Arneis show good levels of sugar, moderate acidity and an excellent aroma. With regards to Dolcetto, the low temperatures of mid August slowed down maturation however the grape harvesting was not delayed. In many cases grapes were picked before maturation in order to avoid the loss of high quality grapes. The 2010 was also a good vintage for Barbera producing very different results in different areas. The Nebbiolo grapes enjoyed favourable conditions in September, showing relatively high levels of sugar and good phenolic maturity. These features should guarantee good structured and ageing potential. Overall, a very good year for Piedmont.
