World Cinema Series: Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto)
1970 | Italy | 110 min | 35mm | NC16
In Italian with English Subtitiles | Consumer advice: Some Nudity
The best examples od the political film genre may be found in the important works by Elio Petri, such as the Working Class Goes to Heaven (1971), Property is No Longer Theft (1973), and most famously, Investigation of A Citizen Above Suspicion, which was awarded a number of festival prizes abroad and in Italy, including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1971.
The exalted citizen is a police inspector (Gian Maria Volonte), who is recently promoted from the Homicide team to the Political department. He murders his mistress Augusta (Florinda Balkan) in the opening minutes of the film and then defies police to arrest him. In the course of the perverted investigation, a Kafkaesque world is revealed, where attempts to control every possible source or expression of dissidence become an overriding administrative, bureaucratic objective and obsession.
