Wine maker of the month May 2011:
Wine Estate Johanninger (Rheinhessen)
The wine estate Johanninger (Rheinhessen) was founded in 1995 by a merger a 3 young wine maker, who brought in their vineyards in 3 different German wine regions, Rheinhessen, Nahe and Rheingau. Due to its unique location overlooking the Rhine and Nahe valley, all vineyards are close to the winery. The soil is different in each wine region (limestone + clay at the Nahe; purple slate at the Rheingau; loess at Rheinhessen) and allow to grow and produce excellent, unique wines. Main focus (70 %) are Pinot wines (Pinot blanc, grey + noir + Chardonnay), 30 % other varieties (Riesling, Silvaner, Sauvignon Blanc, Huxelrebe, St. Laurent, Dornfelder).
